Seedless Jamun Fruit

When Rafiq, told me to try this fruit, I was reluctant as I am not too fond of the jamun fruit. Rafiq runs the fruit and vegetable shop, outside MK Ahmed Supermarket in HSR Layout. He coaxed me to try one saying, "They are seedless !!!" I was intrigued. One bite and it was a flavour explosion - it was sweet, juicy and had just a hint of that tongue numbing astringent jamun flavour.
It is definitely a hybrid as natural jamun has a seed in the middle and the acidic flavour makes you screw up your face as you eat it. These were much smaller too like seedless grapes. They cost Rs.70 a box and were a gem of a find.

There used to be a huge Jamun tree in my school backyard. My friends used to gorge on the fruit when it was in season and lips and cheeks used to be stained purple. This is a fruit you'll find more on pushcarts in the street than on supermarket shelves.

Jamuns are a member of the Myrtaceae family. Guava, Clove and Allspice are relatives. It is also known as Njaval Pazham, Nerale Hunnu, Duhat , Jamblang and Jambol. Jamuns lower blood sugar and are very good for diabetics. It also aids digestion. This is a fruit that is best eaten in moderation.
